Does the use of HGH for height really produce noticeable differences in stature?
Bodybuilders don’t tend to use human growth hormone to increase stature, although some might.
More commonly, the drug is used (without a prescription) by bodybuilders to enhance muscular growth, fat loss, and improvement in overall physique as well as performance.
In medical scenarios, HGH may be recommended in the treatment of growth hormone deficiencies in children and adolescents to increase linear growth.
How effective is it?
In addition to encouraging long bone growth, what else does it do?
If an athlete uses growth hormone for muscular benefits, will it make their bones grow longer too?
HGH for Height
Does HGH for height really produce dramatic results?
It depends on your definition of “dramatic”.
In medical scenarios and in clinical studies, growth hormone injections can improve linear bone growth. For many, the maximum growth in high averages three inches, sometimes less.
Is it worth it? Psychologically for many children and adolescents, the answer is yes.
But at what cost? Growth hormone injections are extremely expensive and cost as much as $50,000 or more for a course of treatment, which may last longer than a year.
Injections (subcutaneous) must be given on a daily basis, at the minimum six to seven times per week. It can be exhausting for children.
For most, the maximum height increases top out anywhere between one to roughly three inches.
What about a bodybuilder using HGH? Will it treat height deficiencies? In adults, no, although accelerated bone growth is a possibility.
In adults, higher than normal levels of growth hormone in the body can lead to a condition known as acromegaly.
Acromegaly causes often extreme and out-of-control growth of bone cells, muscle cells, and connective tissue cells.
It is can contribute to deformities in joints and limited mobility and permanent damage.
Some studies have suggested that acromegaly may contribute to development of larger muscles, but less efficient muscles with smaller muscle fibers than the average population.
So, while HGH for height may benefit pediatric patients, in that regard it doesn’t provide the same effects for adults or bodybuilders.
Where Does HGH Come From?
Human growth hormone is produced in the body, more specifically by the pituitary gland located in the brain.
Body-produced or endogenous growth hormone is known as somatotropin.
Due to genetic malfunctions, there are times when the pituitary gland does not produce adequate amounts of growth hormone.
In children, this can result in a person shorter than their peers. However, just because a person is short or underdeveloped doesn’t necessarily mean that he or she is a good candidate for hormone replacement therapy.
Synthetic or laboratory developed growth hormone can be delivered through injection and is known as somatropin. It’s identical in structure to the growth hormone manufactured by the body.
Bodybuilders looking to HGH for performance enhancement or physique improvement will not find medically based recommendations in regard to dosage.
That’s because use of the drug without medical need is strongly discouraged by medical communities at large.
In medical scenarios, a common and average dosage for adults on growth hormone therapy can range from one (1) IU per day and up to three (3) IUs a day, depending on condition and expectations in regard to results.
Bodybuilders, on average, take (2) IU and up to (4) IU daily, while some go even higher, such as (6) IU or (8) IUs.
This is not recommended. The higher the dosage, the increased risk of side effects.
Bodybuilders often take higher than recommended dosages of drugs such as growth hormone, anabolic androgenic steroids, and other substances to accelerate results.
In such cases, it’s rationalized that the faster results are achieved, the less time that individual has to take the drug.
Even at low dosages and with short-term use, HGH can severely disrupt hormonal levels and balances in the body.
HGH Side Effects
As a performance-enhancing drug, human growth hormone injections can trigger a number of negative results.
Increasing higher than normal levels of muscle mass can actually weaken strength and damage joint function because of the strain placed on connective tissues like the tendons or ligaments.
Yes, growth hormone does aid in the proliferation of connective tissues, but not always in a good way.
A number of bodybuilders find that development of edema, carpal tunnel syndrome, joint pain, and even some cardiovascular issues including atrial fibrillation are just not worth the risk.
Not all bodybuilders using human growth hormone without medical supervision will experience side effects, but it’s more the norm than not. Genetics, age, diet, and type and intensity of exercise can also have an influence on how well the body will develop when using HGH.
HGH for height increases, in children and adolescents is possible, at a cost. For bodybuilders, HGH triggers other activities; some beneficial, while others can be dangerous.
